Accidental Attention stresses your dog out.

When it comes to  Dog Listening we know that our dogs are total experts at feeling like they need to look after us. Even when the consequence of that, is that they feel worried, fearful and anxious.

One of the ways they like to prove to us they are at the top of their game and make all the decisions is by garnering attention on their terms. If you want your dog to enjoy a relaxed, stress free life it's really important to be aware of this and ensure that all attention is offered on your terms. WHY? Because dogs that get lots of attention exactly when they demand it, as well as being kinda annoying, think:

  •  Just sat down in the evening and now they want to play
  • Out for a walk and you want to stop and chat now they want bark at you to throw the ball/stick or just keep walking.
  • First thing in the morning they wake you up ready for a walk/breakfast or just start the day!

are also being raised up the metaphorical ladder to a position they are unqualified for. Doing a job that you are unqualified for leads to confusion, stress and fear.

The aim of the game is to help our dogs relax at the bottom of the ladder while we are at the top taking all the responsibility and making all the decisions.

It's very very simple:

When you want to give you dog some attention, play with them, or cuddle them ALWAYS ask them to come to you first. Even if they are close to you step away and ask. Use your eyes and/or use their name. Not only will this help them to relax it's also kind and shows respect for their needs as well as yours.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in this area is our human use of Accidental Attention. I challenge you to become aware and monitor when this happens. Here are some examples of Accidental Attention that could be hindering your progress toward that  lovely relaxed, stress free dog, more of the time.

  • They walk past and you stroke them
  • They use their eyes to get you to stop what you are doing and get their dinner/take them for a walk/cuddle them
  • They jump up on the sofa uninvited and you say - no get down, negative attention is still attention!
  • Drop a ball/toy at your feet and your throw it
  • Feel like you can't leave the house without a ball or they won't relax and respond to you
  • 2 dogs rough play right at your feet and you respond

I am sure your dog has some of there own tricks up their sleeve! If your dog has any unusual attention seeking behaviour? I would love to hear all about them.

Peaceful paws always,
